The film is a follow-up to Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, which was released in Japan in October 2021.
The two films are based on the Progressive series, which is a floor-by-floor revamp of Reki Kawahara's original Sword Art Online light novel series. The tale shifts to Asuna's perspective as she is forced to fight her way through all 100 levels of Aincrad, an immersive MMORPG environment.

Synopsis
In the year 2022, Kirito (the main protagonist), a lone player who had the good fortune to play the beta version, and the many other Sword Art Online (SAO) players are locked inside a game, unable to logout; the only way to survive is to win. Tampering with or lengthy power interruptions to the NerveGear, the gear that mimics in-game character control by diverting brain impulses, also results in death. To win, players must fight the final boss on the top level; two years later, over 6,000 players remain, with 26 floors still to conquer.
